FLAIL- CLOTHING, WWI FRENCH/GERMAN individual issue CLOTHING FLAIL, as shown in pre-war French & German manuals. Issued 1 per soldier for cleaning clothing. Carried in the pack. Wood handle with leather thongs, VG-EXC. In both French and German books it shows two soldiers holding garment between them and beating the dust out of the cloth, same idea as a rug beater. Crazy but true. The soldiers did not individually wash thier clothing on a regular basis. This was usually reserved for the "rest areas" after front line duty (which could be a very long time). Nothing is written about washing clothing at the front - so they brushed and beat the dirt out when they could.
